Idempotency key

A stable unique request identifier used to prevent accidental duplicate transactions when an operation is retried.

If a connection times out after an order is accepted, sending a new client reference risks creating a second purchase. A resilient reseller should query the original order state and reuse the same documented reference for a safe retry. It is not a substitute for confirming the fulfilment result.

Key facts

  • Re-use the same reference for the same intended order
  • Do not change payload on a retry using the same reference
  • A timeout does not prove the first order failed
