Virtual currency

A digital unit of value used in a defined platform, game or payment ecosystem.

The phrase covers several unrelated models, from in-game coins to platform balances. It does not mean every item is a cryptocurrency or transferable financial asset. In a reseller catalogue, a virtual currency product should clearly identify the brand, eligible region, nominal amount and redemption method.

Key facts

  • The same name can describe different products
  • Some balances are restricted to one account
  • Virtual currency is not automatically crypto
